In an ideal world, picking the paint colors for your walls would be as simple as choosing your favorite color. It’s not always that easy, though. Different colors can enhance or hide the features in your living spaces. So how can you choose the right colors for your home? There are ways to ensure that the colors you choose are “right” while still matching your personal style preferences.
Choosing the right colors starts with knowing what your home needs. Certain colors are more appropriate for certain spaces. In bedrooms, for example, you may want to choose a more cool and calming color. Light colors can make a small room look bigger, and wallpaper can add a fun look without overwhelming the space. Here are some of our tips:
Brightening up your space
Notice the effects that the natural light has on your walls. Do you have big windows? How is the lighting in the room? If the natural lighting isn’t great, you can choose lighter paint colors to brighten up the space and make it seem bigger. If your room is already well lit, you don’t necessarily need this.
Look at your furniture
If you already have furniture or carpeting picked out, you can draw color inspiration from it. It’s harder to replace your furniture than it is to paint the walls, so pick a paint color that goes with the rest of your decor.
Know your favorites
When picking out from a group of different options, know which colors are your favorites. This is your home, and you’re going to see these walls everyday. Make sure you pick colors that you are happy with before you commit to it.
Certain colors are also more appropriate for certain spaces. In bedrooms, for example, you may want to choose a more cool and calming color. If you’re really not sure, go neutral! Neutral colors are always safe and won’t overwhelm your home. Then you can add pops of colors in other ways; like with furniture, pillows and decorations
To help make your decision, you can add paint swatches on the wall of your room. Do a swatch on different walls so you can notice the effects with lighting and windows. Take notice of the change in the tone throughout the day as the sun moves.
Also think about your ceiling; should the paint color continue upwards? In a big room, darker colors on the ceiling will help the room feel more intimate. Likewise, in a smaller room, bright colors on the ceiling will make the room feel all around brighter and bigger!
Picking out paint is not an easy task, so just take it one step at a time before committing to anything. Before you know it, everything will tie together perfectly!
