It is a great time to start thinking about the family and friends visiting for the holidays! But, are you ready to accommodate the clan?! Do you have enough space so that everyone is comfortable and your home doesn’t feel crowded? Well, I have a couple design ideas to create additional seating in your dining area or family room!

Choose Multi-Use Pieces

One way of creating additional seating is by multi-tasking a piece of your living room furniture that often is under appreciated – the side table! It’s always there for your drink or book, but with good design planning, your side tables can double as stools or seating for those extra guests. By choosing wooden or ceramic side tables that can bear weight, you have automatically added extra seating. They can be a really fun and funky way of accommodating more people around the dining room table as well. Make sure the height is standard chair height at 18”.

Another way is to invest in stools that can double as a footstool. Extra stools can easily be tucked away in corners, in front of a fireplace or under a console. By choosing a stool design that is multi-purpose, you can create a beautiful living space without compromising on functionality.

Get Cozy with Poofs

Poofs and large oversized pillows are one of my favorite ways to add additional seating in the lounge areas. It is one of my favorite ways of getting cozy and hanging out with family. With the variety of designs available and the customization that is available, poofs and pillows can add a playful element to your home.

Use that Ottoman!

Lastly, another way to create more seating is by utilizing your ottoman. When not being used for seating, it can double as a coffee table. The great thing about the ottoman is it does not have to be a large piece that takes up the entire room! A combination of several small ottomans grouped together can work as a coffee table or separate seats.

As you can see, entertaining your family and friends doesn’t have to be a scramble for space. By incorporating multi-functional pieces into your design, you too can accommodate your guests but not compromise on your design aesthetic.
